This is where I retreat on the weekends, when I crave solitude, open skies and expansive sea views. OK, I wish. In reality this weekender belongs to NYC-based architect Cary Tamarkin and his lucky family. Nestled on Shelter Island (located at the east end of Long Island), the home is primarily built from reclaimed old-growth cypress logs with a deliberate Japanese design influence, clearly evident in the detailing. Air-conditioning comes via the constant sea breezes which can be channeled and directed throughout the interiors via the many transom windows. If I close my eyes, I can almost smell and hear the ocean now . . .
